Adams-Marc Co-simulation Makes System Analysis 15 Times Faster than Pure Nonlinear FEA Analysis

Litens Automotive Group faced a significant challenge in simulating its complex TorqFiltr torque modulator. The company needed to understand the design's behavior under dynamic loading conditions, but using MSC Software's MSC Marc for per simulation. This lengthy process limited the use of advanced nonlinear analysis in their design and optimization workflow.

The solution from MSC Software was an Adams-Marc co-simulation that integrated multibody dynamics with nonlinear FEA. This approach modeled most components as rigid bodies in Adams while analyzing the critical springs as flexible bodies in Marc, with data exchanged at each time step. The result was a simulation that ran 15 times faster, reducing computation time from 30 hours to just 2 hours with a minimal loss in accuracy. This dramatic reduction in computation time enabled Litens to practically integrate advanced nonlinear FEA into its design process for optimization.
