Accurately Simulating a Four-Legged Walking Robot with Adams

The Italian Institute of Technology used MSC Software’s Adams to study complex carton folding machinery for packaging. The challenge was understanding how a carton behaves during folding, especially the tuck-in operation, which is difficult to automate while maintaining speed and quality.

MSC Software helped IIT build an Adams model of both the carton and the robot to simulate the folding process and validate it against the physical D-RAPS robot. IIT reported up to 90% correlation between physical tests and simulations on robot displacements and contact forces, and researchers could use the model to evaluate different folding methods and new package designs without relying on the physical robot.
