North Kingstown School District Solves Backup Problem with Deduplication

North Kingstown School Department, a K-12 district in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, was struggling with an overtaxed tape-based backup environment. Its nightly backups were taking 30 hours or more, causing network slowdowns and backup window issues as data volume outgrew the capacity of the tape library. The district worked with Mosaic Technology to find a more efficient backup approach, using ExaGrid data deduplication alongside its existing Symantec Backup Exec software.

Mosaic Technology implemented an ExaGrid deduplication backup system that wrote data to disk quickly and reduced storage needs by keeping only changes between backups. The district was able to complete backups in just a few hours, well within its backup windows, while also cutting tape management time from about five hours per week to 30 minutes. Mosaic Technology also helped configure a solution that fit the district’s budget and provided a scalable platform for future capacity growth and possible disaster recovery expansion.
