Earthmade launches compostable power bank with Morrama in 18 months

Earthmade, a product company focused on creating tools for lighter living using plant-based materials, engaged the design and innovation consultancy Morrama to explore new applications for their innovative material, Bamboo-O. Their challenge was to move beyond their existing product line and identify an electronic product category where the compostable nature of their material could effectively reduce waste.

Morrama designed a concept power bank for Earthmade that aligned the product's lifespan with its material end-of-life. The solution utilized injection-molded Bamboo-O for the housing, which is designed to break down in a home composter within 18 months. Morrama incorporated a simple snap-fit mechanism for easy disassembly, allowing the outer casing, battery, and circuit board to be separated for three distinct, sustainable disposal pathways. This proof-of-concept project demonstrated a holistic approach to reducing electronic waste and was launched to provoke industry discussion at the London Design Festival.
