A Monotype Case Study
Transport for London (TfL) commissioned Monotype to update and expand its iconic Johnston typeface, which had defined the city's transport visual identity for a century. The challenge was to adapt the typeface for modern uses, from station maps to mobile apps, without compromising its original character, as certain unique design elements had been lost over years of evolution.
Monotype's solution involved extensive archival research to restore lost idiosyncrasies from Edward Johnston's original 1916 design, such as the distinctive diagonal bowl on the lowercase 'g'. The vendor created the Johnston100 family, introducing five weights including two new ones, Thin and Hairline. The updated typeface began rolling out in July 2016 for printed materials and signage, ensuring the design language continues to act as a constant companion for travelers across London's transport network.
