The ADAPT Centre, a world-leading SFI research center, needed to understand the psychological impact of COVID-19 on Irish citizens through social media analysis. Their challenge was to quickly process thousands of posts to identify negative sentiments, a task made difficult because their team included psychologists with little experience in AI. They required a fast, scalable, and easy-to-use machine learning solution for timely results and chose MonkeyLearn for its platform.
Using MonkeyLearn, the team built a custom emotions classifier to identify feelings like anger and fear and analyzed topics related to those sentiments. They annotated 10,000 posts to train the model and tested 30,000 social media feeds within four weeks. The insights gained from this AI-powered analysis directly informed the design of targeted surveys, helping policy-makers develop strategies to address mental health issues during the pandemic.
