US Department Of Veterans Affairs Goes From Wire Frame To Production App In Weeks, Not Months Or Years, With MongoDB

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, supporting more than 20 million primary customers with a $3.4B IT budget, 400,000 users and over 5,000 applications, faced rising costs and slow delivery as valuable data was locked in relational databases and expensive to extract. The VA needed a way to accelerate app development from wireframe to production and support a much larger number of applications without ballooning costs.

The VA implemented MongoDB as a schema-agnostic, federated eCRUD data store, letting developers build against a single logical data layer via simple AJAX web-service calls. The first version was live in weeks, delivering faster time-to-market, greater information agility, standardized enterprise controls that improved security, and lower costs while enabling the VA to better serve more veterans.
