A MongoDB Case Study
SynapseFI is a fintech platform that simplifies banking for other companies, offering payments, deposit accounts, cards, loans and more — and has processed about $10 billion for 1.8 million end users. As the company scaled, its initial PostgreSQL setup couldn't keep up: relational models were too rigid for rapidly evolving data and development speed, and alternatives like Cassandra required predefined schemas that hampered flexibility.
SynapseFI migrated to MongoDB Atlas on AWS, leveraging JSON storage, microservices compatibility, autoscaling and Atlas tools like Performance Advisor and real-time dashboards. The move reduced database management overhead, enabled continuous deployment instead of weekly cycles, and supported new features (crypto wallets, multi-currency accounts) and geographic expansion by simplifying scaling and performance tuning.
