Swiss Post boosts database responsiveness by 67% with MongoDB

Swiss Post, the national postal service of Switzerland, faced the challenge of sorting up to a million parcels daily across its 13 centers. Their old, decentralized relational database system required manual work, was prone to errors, and limited them to only four software releases per year. To modernize its logistics software for better efficiency and rapid updates, Swiss Post turned to vendor MongoDB and its product MongoDB Atlas.

The solution involved implementing MongoDB Atlas as a NoSQL document database to store all data for each parcel in a single document, enabling fast lookups and automated data management. Using MongoDB, Swiss Post achieved a DevOps approach, resulting in up to six software releases per day compared to four per year previously. The measurable outcomes included a 67% improvement in database responsiveness and roughly 300 times more deployments per year, allowing for quick scaling and predictable performance.
