SteppeChange - Customer Case Study

SteppeChange, a big‑data analytics firm, was hired to build a global mobile customer engagement platform for mobile operators serving 220 million users. The team’s challenge was to deliver a single code‑base that met widely varying national data‑management rules—data residency, encryption, and access controls—while supporting huge scale and low latency.

They chose MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and used MongoDB Zones to shard and place data in sovereign locations while keeping a single, queryable cluster; the deployment included three zones with multiple voting and hidden replicas, AWS AZ distribution, Cloud Manager monitoring, native encryption, and auditing. This design ensured regulatory compliance, simplified data management, matched the app’s JSON model with BSON for faster feature work, and shaved about six months off the development schedule while improving developer productivity.
