A MongoDB Case Study
Shutterfly, a leading online photo service that stores more than six billion images for millions of customers, ran into severe limits with its decade-old Oracle infrastructure: brittle code, slow builds and poor performance as data volumes exploded. Needing an open-source, horizontally scalable database to cut costs and speed development, the company began looking for an alternative that could keep up with rapid feature rollout and high-throughput user activity.
Shutterfly selected MongoDB for its JSON document model, scalability and high performance, building nearly a dozen projects and storing over 20TB of data. The move cut development cycles from months to weeks, dropped average insert latency from ~400ms to 2ms, delivered a 9x performance improvement, reduced costs, and achieved the uptime and throughput targets required for production (including >10,000 requests/sec) using replica sets and MongoDB Management Service for monitoring.
