A MongoDB Case Study
Sailthru, a personalization platform for ecommerce and media brands, needed to scale rapidly as its customer base grew past a billion users and its data volume surged. Using MongoDB, Sailthru initially relied on application-level sharding to manage read and write-heavy workloads, but the approach became complex and difficult to administer as the company expanded.
MongoDB’s auto-sharding, combined with MongoConnector for migration, simplified Sailthru’s architecture by moving data balancing and shard management into the database itself. As a result, Sailthru could add shards without code changes, reducing engineering overhead and allowing the team to focus on product development while supporting more than 40 terabytes of data across 120 nodes.
