A MongoDB Case Study
MetLife, a 145‑year‑old Fortune 50 insurer, faced a major customer‑experience challenge: unify disparate data about more than 100 million clients scattered across 70+ administrative systems. Years of attempts using rigid relational databases failed because of the wide variety of structured and unstructured data and the cost and time of constantly changing schemas.
By adopting MongoDB’s flexible document model, MetLife built a working prototype in two weeks and deployed the “MetLife Wall” into production in three months. The Wall consolidates customer records, claims, notes and documents into a single view so reps can retrieve complete customer information in seconds, accelerate transactions, reduce handling time, and scale globally; MetLife is now rolling the Wall out internationally and extending it for sales, mobile and social integration.
