Retail Brands Expand Globally with Pitney Bowes' Borderfree and MongoDB

Borderfree, a Pitney Bowes company that helps major retail brands sell internationally, needed to modernize its Java-based ecommerce platform to deliver localized, multi-currency shopping experiences across hundreds of markets. The company’s challenge was to scale a geographically distributed, data-center aware system that could support rapid store launches, high performance, and flexible product data for complex global operations.

Borderfree migrated core systems to MongoDB to power its BFX platform, breaking monoliths into microservices, using location-aware sharding and a dynamic schema to rebuild an 80 million–item catalog with custom product attributes. The move, combined with the MEAN stack for analytics, cut time-to-market for new stores by three, reduced operational overhead, improved scalability and reliability across data centers, and delivered deeper insights into international ecommerce behavior.
