A MongoDB Case Study
Nationwide, a major British financial services provider and the world's largest building society, faced the challenge of modernizing its legacy mainframe technology to meet customer demands for real-time, digital-first banking services. Their old system created data silos, slowed development, and hindered the ability to provide integrated, real-time information. To build a new real-time event-streaming platform called Speed Layer, they needed a modern, flexible database and chose MongoDB, specifically the MongoDB Atlas cloud database service.
Using MongoDB Atlas as the core database for their Speed Layer platform, Nationwide replicated mainframe data in real-time via Kafka. This gave developers a simple, JSON-based data model to work with, allowing them to build and release new customer-facing features rapidly without managing infrastructure. The solution broke down data silos, improved developer productivity, and created a foundation for future innovation. MongoDB enabled Nationwide to gain a competitive advantage by building data-led, real-time applications at scale.
