Case Study: Cisco achieves 8x faster e-commerce response times and continuous availability with MongoDB

Migrating a Major Revenue Generation Platform to Improve Customer Experience

Cisco’s e‑commerce team modernized its mission‑critical online configuration, pricing and ordering platform—used by 170,000 users and handling millions of hits per day—to replatform for the cloud and dramatically improve customer experience. The goals were clear: ensure fault tolerance and continuous availability, enable zero‑downtime deployment, and cut response times by at least 5x (moving from multi‑second page loads to sub‑second rendering).

Cisco selected MongoDB for strong consistency, flexible document modeling and secondary indexes, validated it with rigorous PoCs, and migrated the order‑capture system to a 5‑node replica set across three data centers using MongoDB Ops Manager. Since going live Cisco reports no post‑launch issues, pages now render in 600–700 ms at the 99th percentile (versus ~5 s previously), maximum query latency is roughly 10x lower than their original target, upgrades have been completed without downtime, and the team continues to migrate additional services.
