A MongoDB Case Study
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH), the largest health system in Memphis with six hospitals and nearly 14,000 employees, faced a failing legacy relational system for managing room reservations, cleaning, turnover, and patient transport — critical functions for a near-capacity hospital. A proposed $1.6M upgrade prompted MLH’s Process Improvement and Innovation team to build a replacement instead, aiming for faster, real-time coordination of hospitality services.
They developed Melodi Flow using MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and the Meteor framework to deliver a real-time master view of rooms, cleaners, and transporters, replacing pagers with iOS apps and reading updates from MongoDB replica set oplogs. The system improved resilience and backups, captured detailed interaction data for analytics, and quickly revealed patient-flow peaks, valleys, and bottlenecks — enabling complaint analysis, employee benchmarking, and plans to scale across hospitals and integrate richer BI and EMR data.
