A MongoDB Case Study
KPMG France’s technology subsidiary KTS built Loop, a collaborative accounting suite used by thousands of CPAs and clients, and faced the challenge of ingesting massive, highly variable accounting data (sales, invoices, payroll, bank statements, etc.) from many systems while delivering real‑time, customizable reports and an industry‑first financial benchmarking service. Traditional relational databases couldn’t handle the schema flexibility, mixed workloads, and scale required to support thousands of concurrent users and per‑customer customizable schemas.
KTS implemented a MongoDB-based data lake and supporting layers—sharded clusters for analytics, three‑node replica sets for caching and metadata, and logging for Tableau—deployed on Azure and managed with MongoDB Atlas. The solution enabled scalable ingestion and analytics, per-customer schema customization, high-speed session management, continuous backups and 24x7 support; results included fivefold tested scaling headroom, support for current production loads with plans to reach 20,000 customers, and an estimated 50% faster time to market along with lower operational overhead and improved developer productivity.
