India’s Largest Publisher Unlocks Behavioral Insight with MongoDB-Powered Real Time Web Analytics Engine

Times Internet Limited, the digital arm of the Times of India Group, is India’s largest publisher reaching over 150 million readers and serving some 2 billion page views a month across 22+ properties. Faced with high-volume, high-velocity, multi-structured user behavior data and a need for rapid development agility, TIL needed a real-time analytics solution to help editors understand engagement and iterate on content quickly.

TIL built a MongoDB-powered web analytics engine (deployed as a sharded cluster with ~50 nodes and ~1.5 TB active data) that uses MongoDB’s query language and aggregation pipeline to deliver heat maps, dashboards and personalized recommendations in real time. The solution accelerated development, scaled to millions of users, improved editorial decision-making (A/B testing, headline/image tweaks, layout changes) and turned raw data into actionable insights that increased reader engagement.
