Humana implements FHIR in the cloud with MongoDB and improves patient experiences

Humana, a leading health insurance provider, faced the challenge of modernizing its decades-old legacy systems and data from multiple acquisitions to achieve FHIR compliance for data interoperability. The goal was to enhance personalized patient experiences without compromising data integrity or security, all while avoiding a disruptive rip-and-replace approach. To tackle this, they worked with MongoDB and utilized its MongoDB Atlas product.

The solution implemented with MongoDB involved building a cloud-native core data fabric and an API-first integration methodology. This allowed Humana to pull data from disparate core systems, model it in a standardized format within MongoDB Atlas, and serve it rapidly for interoperable FHIR APIs. As a result, Humana became one of the first healthcare insurers to fully implement FHIR, enabling real-time, bidirectional data integration that immediately improved patient experiences and allowed the company to differentiate itself based on service outcomes.
