A MongoDB Case Study
Bluedot Innovation provides a location services platform used by customers like News Corp, Shell and Samsung to enable location-based commerce and social experiences. When building a new mobile SDK they needed extremely accurate, low‑battery geofencing that could quickly return only the nearest geofences—each potentially a different shape and size—so the backend had to do most of the heavy lifting at scale.
Bluedot implemented MongoDB’s geospatial features and GeoJSON support to index polygons, lines and other shapes (not just circles), enabling far finer‑grained geofences and real‑world contours. The solution was straightforward to integrate with Java/Spring and Node/Mongoose stacks; performance was optimized with a caching layer and benefited from MongoDB 3.2’s geospatial improvements, which significantly lowered cost‑per‑query. The result is a highly accurate, scalable geofencing service that disrupted incumbent approaches and continues to improve with MongoDB’s ongoing enhancements.
