Case Study: Blinkist achieves rapid global scale and resilient performance with MongoDB Atlas (MongoDB)

How Blinkist Powers its Berlin Startup on MongoDB Atlas

Blinkist is a Berlin-based startup that turns nonfiction books into 15-minute summaries delivered via a mobile app with over five million users and a developer-led culture. Growth exposed a major infrastructure problem: the company had been hosted on Compose (a third‑party MongoDB service) that changed its architecture and left Blinkist locked into an old MongoDB version, creating migration headaches and the prospect of freezing development or switching to MySQL.

Blinkist moved to MongoDB Atlas with direct support from MongoDB engineers who implemented feature fixes and enabled live data sync, allowing a smooth migration. The result was a reliable, high-performance platform on AWS that absorbed peak loads (spikes from ~7.5k to 40k requests per minute) without user impact, restored developer velocity, and let the team focus on microservices, analytics and growth rather than infrastructure.
