A MongoDB Case Study
Breuninger, a top German high-end retailer with a 130-year history, needed an online experience that matched its premium stores but its legacy PCM platform was monolithic, slow to change, and caused frequent code freezes. With aggressive omni-channel goals and rapid team growth, the company needed faster time-to-market, better developer autonomy, and a database that could handle rich, varied product data while meeting GDPR requirements.
Breuninger rebuilt its e-commerce platform using a microservices architecture backed by MongoDB Atlas on AWS, automating deployments and giving teams ownership of independent document-model databases for each step of the customer journey. The result was a unified shopping site composed from ~25 self-contained systems, faster feature delivery (built in months instead of years), improved performance and developer velocity, reduced operational overhead, and compliance with regulatory and security needs for thousands of daily online users.
