Case Study: Genomics England achieves rapid, petabyte-scale genomic analysis with MongoDB

A MongoDB Case Study

Genomics England uses MongoDB to Power the Data Science Behind the 100,000 Genomes Project

Genomics England, a government-owned organization running the 100,000 Genomes Project, sequences whole genomes from patients with rare diseases and cancers to improve diagnoses and treatments. The program produces massive, complex and sensitive genomic and clinical datasets that demand flexible data models, strict security and fine‑grained access controls, plus fast query performance so researchers and clinicians can explore and interpret results without long delays.

To meet those needs Genomics England deployed MongoDB Enterprise Advanced as the core of its data platform, gaining document‑based flexibility, operational security and scalable performance. The platform powers tools like Cellbase and OpenCGA, cutting complex query times from hours to milliseconds, annotating roughly 20,000 variants per second, and enabling faster discoveries and patient diagnoses as the project scales to tens of thousands of genomes.
