DVLA Digitizes Vital Great Britain Driving License Data and Makes it Available Online With MongoDB

The Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) digitized Britain’s paper counterpart driving licences so motorists can check points and expiry dates online. The challenge was to store and record every British driver’s data and make it reliably and quickly accessible at national scale while meeting the UK government’s Digital by Default standards.

DVLA built an open-source stack with MongoDB as the primary database for its View Driving Licence service, giving the flexibility, scalability and high availability needed to handle hundreds of millions of annual requests. The result is fast, dependable online access via GOV.UK, reduced reliance on paper counterparts (for example when renting a car), and a platform that meets the government’s quality and security requirements.
