City of Chicago analyzes 7 million daily data points with MongoDB

The City of Chicago faced the challenge of leveraging its vast and siloed municipal data to improve services and operations. To meet a mayoral goal of using data analysis to improve services and open data to the public, the city needed a solution that could handle massive, constantly changing streams of structured and unstructured information in real time. They turned to MongoDB Enterprise Advanced to build an intelligent operations platform.

Using MongoDB's flexible document model and powerful real-time analytics, the city created the WindyGrid platform. This solution aggregates over seven million data points daily from 15 departments, providing managers with a unified, geospatial view of city operations. The results allowed the city to move from reactive to proactive management, identifying and preventing issues like rodent infestations and traffic problems. MongoDB enabled Chicago to create a foundational system for predictive analytics, revolutionizing operations and fostering public innovation through open data.
