A MongoDB Case Study
AOL faced explosive growth and needed a more flexible, easy-to-deploy database to replace complex legacy systems; they selected MongoDB but had to overcome significant migration challenges driven by complicated internal systems and identity data.
The team built a new identity platform and adapters for legacy apps, migrated systems in four phased waves, and used dual reads/writes to funnel production traffic into MongoDB while minimizing user impact. With MongoDB support, the project succeeded — today the deployment runs across 15 shards with about 60–70 GB per shard.
