How SmoothPay Integrated Payments and Loyalty Points in One App

SmoothPay set out to eliminate the slow, awkward checkout experience where customers used one card to pay and another to collect loyalty points. Co‑founders Brian Deck and David Yellowlees built a mobile app that combined payments and rewards, partnering with Moneris and using Moneris’ ecommerce payment gateway and tokenization to launch SmoothPay in 2013.

Using Moneris’ flexible ecommerce APIs and tokenization (with PCI, security and fraud protections), SmoothPay enabled customers to pay by phone and instantly collect and redeem loyalty points, accept mobile payments via SmoothPay terminals or integrated POS, and transfer funds between customers and businesses. The result: SmoothPay is used by more than 200 retail locations, has grown to a team of about 25, and is expanding nationally while helping merchants drive sales and profitability — all made possible with Moneris’ payment platform.
