Qorium develops lab-grown leather with 99% less water using Molecular Devices

Qorium, a spin-off from Maastricht University, faced the challenge of reducing the environmental impact of traditional leather production. Their goal was to develop a sustainable, lab-grown leather alternative that uses significantly less water and energy. To refine their product and assess its quality for commercial viability, they needed to perform high-throughput assays quickly and reliably with minimal variability. Molecular Devices provided the ImageXpress Pico Automated Cell Imaging System and SpectraMax iD5 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader to help address this challenge.

The solution from Molecular Devices enabled Qorium to automate their imaging process and rapidly quantify key metrics like DNA and collagen content. This allowed the team to collect and analyze large volumes of data with improved reliability and speed. As a result, Qorium dramatically accelerated their work towards producing a commercially viable, environmentally friendly leather that uses 99% less water and 66% less energy than traditional methods.
