CABI rolls out Plantwise app to 36 countries in 18 months with Modular Digital

CABI, a not-for-profit organisation focused on solving agricultural and environmental issues, faced a challenge with its Plantwise project. Their plant doctors in developing countries were using an inefficient analogue system for data collection, leading to inaccuracies, data loss, and long timescales. They approached vendor Modular Digital to develop an Android app to replace this outdated process and transform their operational effectiveness.

Modular Digital designed and built a custom Android app from scratch, optimized for use on inexpensive Samsung Galaxy tablets in challenging field conditions. The solution allowed for offline data collection, in-app analytics, and features like partial form completion and SMS recommendations for farmers. The app was successfully rolled out to hundreds of plant doctors across 36 countries, drastically improving data accuracy and capture times for CABI's critical academic research.
