A Modo Labs Case Study
The University of Notre Dame’s Office of Information Technologies confronted a common higher-education problem: a diverse campus community—undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, guests and visitors—wanted personalized, mobile-first access to dynamic campus information (course schedules, transit, events, menus, facility updates). Their existing app offered a monolithic, undergraduate-focused experience that made other groups feel overlooked and limited app adoption.
OIT introduced persona-based home screens (undergrad, grad, faculty/staff, alumni, guests and temporary event personas), created an advisory council to own and tailor content and push notifications for each persona, and enabled multiple, location-aware experiences. The result: rapid adoption and engagement—monthly app views more than doubled (e.g., Welcome Weekend views rose to ~1.4M from ~641K year-over-year) and the app delivered 2.5× more screen views than the main website, broadening reach and relevance across campus.
