The University Of Notre Dame Mobile Experience: A Winning Strategy For Citizen Development

The University of Notre Dame, a 12,000‑student institution with 5,000 staff and faculty, needed to replace its aging mobile site with a modern, maintainable native mobile experience that could integrate with any back‑end, be updated quickly, and engage students as both users and contributors. The challenge was to deliver a beautiful, enterprise‑wide campus app without overburdening IT and to enable non‑developers to create timely, relevant content and features.

Notre Dame chose Modo Labs’ Kurogo platform, which enabled fast integration, role‑based editions, and a Publisher tool for non‑technical authors. Student developers built popular modules (Weather, Webcams, an O’SNAP ride request system) while staff used Kurogo to add 17 modules at launch—including maps, dining, athletics and calendar—and two editions in April 2014. The app reached 20,000 downloads in its first year, continues to receive frequent updates and seasonal modules, and has expanded student experience and IT capacity by shifting routine development to citizen developers.
