George Washington University Enriches the Student Experience, Eases IT’s Burden with Modo Labs-Powered App

George Washington University, a large, mobile-first institution in Washington, D.C., struggled with a homegrown campus app that by 2012 had become costly and time-consuming to maintain. Frequent OS updates, overly technical development needs, limited flexibility, and the inability to let other campus departments manage content left IT overwhelmed and constrained the university’s ability to deliver personalized, timely mobile services to students.

GW adopted Modo Labs’ Modo Campus platform to replace the homegrown app, giving non-technical staff simple tools to create and manage modules, a Communicate tool for personalized messages, and automatic handling of OS/device changes. The result was a stronger mobile presence with far less IT effort, expanded features through partner integrations (like beacon technology), and active student involvement—students using Modo won campus app competitions and now help drive app enhancements.
