Braila.ro, the city of Brăila in Romania (population ~180,000), needed a fast, budget-conscious way to modernize its public transit without new data centers, servers or IT staff and while reusing existing on‑vehicle validators. Modeshift was engaged to supply a fare collection and MaaS solution that could meet tight budget and timeline constraints and integrate with AVL/RTPI and automatic fare collection needs.

Modeshift implemented the Modeshift Fare Collection Solution in phased rollout, migrating Braila’s media‑based system to an account‑based platform while reusing existing validators to cut costs. The system went live in just a few months, produced several thousand app users and thousands of riders accessing real‑time passenger information and station displays, and delivered revenue increases and cost savings that largely covered the as‑a‑service fees.
