Using Model9 to Write to IBM Cloud Object Storage

An EMEA bank sought to modernize its mainframe data management infrastructure by moving away from its IBM virtual tape libraries and associated software, including DFSMShsm, DFSMSrmm, and ISKLM. The goal was to increase throughput by writing directly to IBM Cloud Object Storage. To accomplish this, the bank tested a solution from Model9 against IBM's offering.

The Model9 Cloud Data Manager for Mainframe solution was implemented, which required no additional hardware. The results were significantly better than the IBM alternative; Model9 archived 1.1TB of data in just 21 minutes, achieving a throughput of 908MB/s. This performance was 17 times faster than the IBM solution, providing the bank with a cheaper, easier-to-implement, and higher-performing path to a modern, tape-free environment.
