Clackamas County Bids Laptops a Not-So-Fond Farewell with MobileIron Solutions

Clackamas County, Oregon—a 376,000‑resident government that supports a wide range of field operations—faced a surge in employee mobile device use as executives and staff wanted to connect iPhones and iPads to county systems. Technology Services needed a secure, scalable way to integrate personal and county‑issued iOS devices, protect Microsoft Exchange and Wi‑Fi, enforce acceptable‑use policies, and reduce reliance on laptops and air cards.

The county deployed MobileIron iOS Management and AppConnect, built a web portal and automated provisioning via the MobileIron API, and implemented certificate‑based authentication. The result: secure BYOD and county device onboarding with automated billing and policy enforcement, mobile apps that replace laptop workflows for departments like Sheriff and Roads, lower device and connectivity costs, and strengthened overall security with ongoing vendor support.
