Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Using Smartphone Technology to Improve Clinical Team Workflow

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, a 238‑bed not‑for‑profit community hospital with over 1,700 employees and 400+ clinicians, needed to move from basic mobile phones to secure smartphone communications to support urgent physician‑nurse coordination, protect patient health information, and simplify team workflow and staff location. After evaluating options, Henry Mayo selected the MH‑CURE smartphone application from Mobile Heartbeat for its secure texting, MEDITECH integration, staff assignment and directory features.

Mobile Heartbeat implemented a three‑month pilot of MH‑CURE in a 80–100 person medical‑surgical unit, and adoption was rapid due to the app’s simple interface and MEDITECH interface. The solution enabled secure texting, Dynamic Role calling, broadcast messages and on‑shift staff directories, leading to measurable efficiency gains: nurses recorded a 38% decrease in steps taken (translating to time saved), improved patient throughput and higher staff satisfaction, and Henry Mayo is rolling out Mobile Heartbeat’s MH‑CURE hospital‑wide.
