Wordnik Harnesses the Internet to Define Every Word in the English Language

Wordnik is a nonprofit building the largest online English dictionary by word count (now over eight million unique words and nearly one billion example sentences). To ingest massive, varied text-mined and machine-learned data and to get dependable operational help, Wordnik selected MongoDB and needed a managed hosting partner — mLab — to provide scalable, fully managed MongoDB hosting and trusted support.

mLab delivered a fully managed MongoDB platform plus Telemetry, a data browser and hands-on database guidance, helping Wordnik optimize queries, manage upgrades, and add features like a Word of the Day and an expanded public API. With mLab’s tools and expert support, Wordnik achieved rapid scalability and operational reliability, now serving thousands of developers (about 20,000 API users) and continuing to grow its corpus to support new features and future language projects.
