A mLab Case Study
Nightscout is an open-source, volunteer-driven DIY project that gives parents and individuals with type 1 diabetes real-time remote access to Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) data. Because most Nightscout users are non-technical parents and budget-sensitive families, the project needed a low-cost, easy-to-use cloud database to securely store and serve CGM data; Nightscout selected mLab’s Database-as-a-Service (managed MongoDB cloud databases) to fill that role.
mLab provided simple, affordable managed MongoDB instances (including a free Sandbox plan with up to 500 MB and paid tiers) and multi-cloud deployment options, allowing non-developers to set up Nightscout quickly with volunteer support. As a result, caregivers can monitor CGM data in real time from phones, watches, or browsers, giving children greater freedom to attend school, play sports, or sleep over while parents retain remote oversight—outcomes Nightscout attributes to mLab’s reliable, behind-the-scenes database management.
