A MiX Telematics Case Study
Unitrans Agriculture & Mining Services, part of the Unitrans Fuel, Agriculture and Mining Division operating across Southern and Eastern Africa, needed to standardise fleet telematics across borders and improve operational efficiency in Mozambique—specifically to reduce accidents, lower fuel consumption and boost supply‑chain productivity at the Tongaat Huletts Xinevane pilot site. They engaged MiX Telematics (via channel partner Compass Fleet Management) to provide its FM Communicator on‑board units and FM‑Web tracking and reporting portal.
MiX Telematics installed 84 FM Communicator units connected to FM‑Web, deployed driver tags, geo‑fences and exception alerts, and supported training and on‑site coaching through Compass FM; the rollout was completed in just over two weeks. The MiX Telematics solution drove marked reductions in over‑speeding and excessive idling between June–August 2013, producing fuel savings of R66,000 per month—more than covering the monthly service cost—and prompting Unitrans to expand the system to two additional mills (about 120 more vehicles).
