Red Bus, a Council Controlled-Trading Organisation based in Christchurch carrying 3.8 million passengers a year with a 120-bus fleet, faced a fuel-efficiency and emissions challenge following an EECA review that recommended better fuel data, telematics and driver behaviour change. To address this, Red Bus trialled MiX Telematics’ solution—MiX Fleet Manager plus RIBAS Display (installed via channel partner Vehicle Technologies)—to gain real-time vehicle and driver data and in-cab feedback.

MiX Telematics provided on-board computers, a secure online management portal and RIBAS in-cab displays; a four-bus trial with careful calibration and driver engagement immediately delivered average reductions in fuel use and a marked drop in speeding events both on route and in depots. Driver ratings shifted toward green, and based on the savings identified Red Bus expanded the rollout with a further 73 buses (77 installed), with anticipated ongoing fuel, maintenance and safety benefits from the MiX Telematics solution.
