A Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions Case Study
The University of Nebraska - Lincoln partnered with Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions (ICONICS) to tackle rising energy use and equipment deterioration across its 16.5 million gross square feet of campus buildings. Aiming to cut energy consumption by about 15% and move from periodic recommissioning to continuous monitoring, UNL needed a way to detect faults early across thousands of sensors and mechanical systems.
Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions deployed its Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD) solution—built on Microsoft technologies and driven by big data and IoT—to monitor equipment in real time across 52 buildings (with plans to expand to ~80). The ICONICS FDD generated roughly 1,100 fault detections per month in year one (avoiding nearly $200,000 in annual wasted energy), enabled remote fixes, reduced catastrophic breakdowns, and can prevent up to $25,000 in energy costs per air handler per year, preserving efficiency and improving service.
