Microsoft and ICONICS Partner to Fine-tune Energy and Maintenance Systems

Microsoft faced a sprawling facilities challenge at its 500‑acre Redmond campus: 125 buildings, roughly 30,000 pieces of equipment and decades of disparate sensors and building‑management systems created data dissonance, energy waste and high maintenance costs. Rather than a US$60 million rip‑and‑replace, Microsoft partnered with Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions and leveraged ICONICS COTS software to build a data‑driven “analytical blanket” that could unify the campus’ heterogeneous systems.

Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions deployed the ICONICS analytics and visualization layer to ingest billions of data points (up to ~500 million transactions per day), enable real‑time diagnostics and orchestrate equipment across buildings. A 13‑building pilot delivered millions in utility and maintenance savings, put engineers back to 95% engineering work, and produced measurable gains — forecasted energy reductions of 6–10% per year with payback under 18 months, 48% of faults corrected within 60 seconds, and improved technician efficiency (tens of thousands of work orders processed per quarter). The vendor’s solution has since been scaled across the campus and is being offered to other building managers.
