A Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions Case Study
AES Wind Generation, a division of AES in North Palm Springs, CA, operates the 49‑turbine, 1 MW each Mountain View IV wind farm and needed a dependable SCADA and alarming system to perform real‑time calculations, measure unit availability, and validate produced energy versus manufacturer power curves. AES selected Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions’ GENESIS64 and Hyper Historian to provide an open‑protocol (OPC) SCADA and historian that would support virtualization, web‑based HMI access without client installs, and flexible data processing independent of the turbine controllers.
Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions deployed GENESIS64 platform services (including Universal Data Management) and Hyper Historian, using global aliasing to rapidly replicate configuration across all 49 turbines and a Matrikon OPC conversion of the MHI CNET protocol. The system captures roughly 30 points per turbine (plus ~300 digital points) plus substation data and alarms, delivers centralized web access with WPF graphics, and let AES add features (for example, a low‑wind indication) in‑house at minimal cost. The solution shortened commissioning time, centralized monitoring and control, reduced dependence on third‑party developers, and produced measurable operational and cost savings.
