The Williams Company’s Tulsa-based legal department faced a mandate born of the early‑2000s energy downturn: deliver more internal legal services while dramatically cutting budget, headcount and outside counsel spend. Under General Counsel James Bender the team was slimmed down and given broader oversight of compliance, security and records functions, but its legacy matter system couldn’t provide fast search, detailed financial reporting or efficient timekeeping across three regulated business units — so the department needed a flexible, customizable platform that could keep pace with changing regulatory requirements.

In 2011 Williams selected Mitratech’s TeamConnect and built tailored tools — a Time Entry tool to capture FERC rate‑recovery hours and post chargebacks to the general ledger, an Audit Report Tool to surface contingent‑liability candidates, and a Records Retention Tool to automate disposition.
