How Wills for Heroes standardized their client intake form to produce legal documents faster for the f irst responders they serve

Wills for Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free estate planning (wills, powers of attorney, living wills) to first responders. The organization needed a way to standardize client intake and speed document production during clinic-style sessions, so in 2001 lead attorney Eric R. Blaine partnered with HotDocs and implemented Mitratech HotDocs software to replace manual document assembly.

Using Mitratech HotDocs’ guided intake forms and automatic document population, Wills for Heroes reduced clinic sessions to about 20 minutes–1 hour and can generate a full set of documents in a single meeting. The Mitratech HotDocs implementation has helped draft over 2,000 estate plans, broaden the pool of attorneys who can volunteer with minimal training, cut errors through standardization, and supported program growth including the Wills for Veterans expansion.
