Virgin Money, a digital‑first UK bank serving 6.4 million customers, needed to keep its online experiences world‑class amid rising competition and customer expectations. Manual and offline steps for applicants who failed database checks were slowing onboarding, creating friction and forcing some customers to visit branches or send documents by mail.

By integrating Mitek’s (formerly HooYu) digital identity platform—including selfie capture, liveness detection, ID document validation, facial biometrics, address proofing and geolocation—Virgin Money digitized the entire account‑opening journey. The solution removed manual touchpoints, streamlined onboarding, strengthened KYC/AML controls against impersonation and account takeover, and helped the bank speed up customer acquisition while reducing its physical footprint.
