A Mission Case Study
MicroSearch, a Boston-area digital library services company, needed to replace an aging two–data center on-premises IT environment after its longtime administrator left, while also supporting very large proprietary databases and older Microsoft Windows and SQL workloads. The company wanted a faster, lower-cost path to modernize its infrastructure, avoid a major $100K hardware refresh, and maintain secure access for employees and sensitive applications.
Mission designed and implemented a cloud migration to AWS, consolidating 36 servers into 24 EC2 instances, enabling Windows and Microsoft applications to run efficiently, adding VPN access and Amazon WorkSpaces for QuickBooks users, and setting up disaster recovery across two AWS regions. Mission’s optimization efforts cut expected ongoing cloud costs by 80%, reduced costs by over 51% through right-sizing and automation, and delivered an additional 30% savings through reserved instance planning, while also improving security, performance, and backup resilience.
