PowerX scales hundreds of edge devices with Mirantis k0s

PowerX Inc., a manufacturer of renewable energy solutions, faced the challenge of scaling and managing hundreds of heterogeneous edge devices running IoT gateway software across Japan. The complexity of maintaining multiple software versions and ensuring consistent deployments across these resource-constrained devices was a significant hurdle. To address this, they worked with vendor Mirantis to implement a solution using the lightweight Kubernetes distribution k0s.

Mirantis provided k0s, a minimal, open source Kubernetes distribution that could run on PowerX's resource-constrained ARMv7 and Intel devices. This enabled the creation of a hybrid cluster integrating a GKE control plane with k0s agents on the edge devices. The solution resulted in scalable and reliable operations across all nodes with self-healing and automation. PowerX achieved improved observability with unified dashboards and reduced costs and complexity by using the efficient k0s distribution.
