Inmarsat upgrades Telco Cloud without disrupting active NFV workloads with Mirantis

Inmarsat, a world leader in global mobile satellite communications, faced the challenge of scaling up its infrastructure to build its next-generation ORCHESTRA network. The company needed to replace costly dedicated hardware appliances and virtualize the majority of its telco infrastructure to create a fully cloud-based network. This transformation aimed to increase operational efficiency through automation and optimize its total cost of ownership. To meet this challenge, Inmarsat selected Mirantis and its Mirantis Telco Cloud solution, which is based on Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes.

Mirantis implemented its Telco Cloud platform with an NFV deployment profile, providing a unified platform to manage both VMs and containers. The solution enabled Inmarsat to improve the scalability and performance of its GEO, LEO, and terrestrial 5G services while ensuring reliable, ubiquitous connectivity with a consistent user experience. A key result was the ability for Mirantis to perform upgrades to the infrastructure software without negatively impacting active network functions virtualization (NFV) workloads, enhancing operational agility.
